The Bike Bowl began as a multi-day event in 1967. In addition to the 25 mile team race, which is the highlight of this year’s event, the Bike Bowl also featured a tricycle race. The 1967 Blue and Gold touts the event as a “huge success”, with 84 riders participating in the 25 mile team race. The UNK Archives has a number of photos and flyers from previous Bike Bowl events, available on our Flickr page. Many of the images date from the 1989 Bike Bowl, with a scattering of images from other years. Unfortunately, none of the people featured in the pictures are identified. If you’re in them or know someone who is, we’d love that information! Comment on the Flickr image or contact Laurinda Weisse, the University Archivist, with the information. We’d also love to fill in the missing years; if you have pictures or other items from previous Bike Bowls which you’d be willing to share with the campus community, please let us know.
While we can’t offer high profile entertainment like the inaugural Bike Bowl (the Kingston Trio played at the closing), the 2015 Bike Bowl still promises to be a great event. It will take place on April 25 and is open to campus, alumni, and the community at large. Come participate in a campus tradition!
