Search for businesses and people with ReferenceUSA

Written by Jon Ritterbush, E-Resources and Serials Librarian

The library recently added ReferenceUSA to its list of e-resources.  This searchable directory provides access to 14 million public and private U.S. businesses, as well as over 200 million U.S. residents.  This new e-resource is made possible with funding from the Student Library Enhancement Fee and from the College of Business and Technology.

Whether you’re doing research on a particular business sector for a marketing class, or looking for potential employers in your personal job hunt, ReferenceUSA offers a wealth of information.  The business information is gathered from a variety of reliable sources, such as yellow and white pages, annual reports, 10-Ks, government data, business magazines, top newspapers, the U.S. Postal Service, Internet research, and the U.S. Census Bureau. In fact, 24 million phone calls are placed annually to businesses to verify the accuracy of this data!

The residential information in ReferenceUSA is gathered primarily from telephone white pages. Researchers will find it to be essential for planning family reunions and weddings, organizing class reunions, finding neighbors or long-lost friends, and locating relatives, just to name a few.

ReferenceUSA is listed on the library’s “Articles & E-Resources” webpage in the alphabetical listings, as well as in these subject areas:

  • Careers and Test Prep
  • Directories
  • Business and Management
  • Geography and Earth Sciences
